  • About Logis de Chênard

The original mansion was built around 1630 and belonged to Sieur de Mesmole until the French Revolution. Logis de Chenard was then bought by Jean-Baptiste Tabuteau. The current Logis was largely rebuilt in 1820 but kept its two massive entrance towers (Les Pigeonniers) from the previous period. One century later, René Tabuteau decided to create a remarkable Park next to the house. It was designed by the emblematic Charente landscape architect Eugène Bureau between 1922 and 1930. The task was really tough as it necessitated then bringing tons of good ground to the limestone hills of Chenard but also planting rare tree species. The daughter of René, Simone-Alice Signac-Tabuteau kept on magnifying the gardens and was always happy to welcome visitors. Since she passed away in 2006, her cousin Alain de Lavallade, his daughter Anne-Sophie and her husband Arnaud de Gabriac have had the charge of perpetuating the magnificence of The Logis and Gardens of Chênard. They extended the centennial linden alley down to the entrance of the Logis and have planted new species in the Park. They rely on Marie Claude Braud who has been the valorous Gardener since 1997. The gardens and the exteriors of the Logis are recognised as Monuments Historiques de France since 1992. Since 2016 a gite can welcome visitors considering staying one week or more in this beautiful countryside very close to many attractions and sightseeings in Charente, Dordogne and Périgord.
